Chapter17

Grant frowned at me as I dangled in front of him. He cocked his head to one side to see me better, a deep frown etching his forehead. After a moment, recognition dawned on him.

“You again?!” he exclaimed, his confusion dissipating. His brown eyes traveled to the sword in my hand, and his surprise at finding me there fully morphed to anger.

She’s just an apprentice. She’s not supposed to use a Queller yet, Grant had said in LeBeau’s office. Yet, here I was again in possession of a weapon reserved for certified demon hunters. He wasn’t happy about it, not one bit.

Grant snarled and re-focused his attention on Jell-O Boy. He gestured toward the other demon hunters.

“Surround it on all flanks,” he ordered.

They obeyed, their boots stomping on the floor as they made a circle around the demon.

“No one attacks unless I say so.”

What?! If someone had a shot, why should they wait on Grant’s command? That was bullshit. He just wanted a notch on his belt, one more quelling toward getting another bar on the left shoulder of his uniform.

“Don’t listen to him!” I shouted. “Get him if you can.”

Grant narrowed his eyes at me. “Insolent girl. Shut your mouth if you want to live. You know nothing about demon hunting.”

I highly doubted he was worried about me coming out of this alive. I had to do something. I twisted my head to look back at the demon. New eyes had sprouted all over his head, so he could keep track of all the hunters surrounding him. I tried to nick him with my sword, but I couldn’t reach his body. Too bad I couldn’t use my telekinetic powers to hurl it at him. Early on, I’d learned that the Quellers were useless without the human touch. Someone had to wield them.

Suddenly, I noticed that one of his tentacles was slyly reaching for a huge speaker at the edge of the dance floor.

“Watch out!” I warned as Jell-O Boy flung the speaker toward one of the hunters.

The young brunette—probably a fourth-year student doing her field work—raised her arms over her head as if that would save her, but she would get crushed. Putting all my strength behind the push, I extended my free hand towards the speaker and managed to deviate it just enough. The huge box crashed against a table to the left of the brunette, smashing it down to bits. She fell to her knees, slumping with relief, and threw a grateful glance in my direction.

The demon flung more things around the room: chairs, tables, stools, bottles of booze. They rained all around while the hunters barely managed to dodge the onslaught. Grant had sidestepped closer to Jell-O Boy, whirling his sword and managing to keep the many tentacles at bay, a few times coming very close to nicking the demon’s gelatinous skin.

My head was pounding, and it was getting hard to breathe. Being upside down wasn’t fun at all. I had to get down. As if Jell-O boy had heard my thoughts, he started swinging me like a pendulum.
